The bus was another marathon. It left the Harem bus station on the Asian side of Istanbul at 2pm, to get to Kars near the Armenian border 20 hours later.
Getting the bike the bike on the bus was a bit of a drama, the front fender rather suffered from the bus staff lack of depth vision. Some brinkmanship bargaining was required to avoid paying more in 'extra luggage' costs than I had. I'd managed to get around paying this as the luggage had been stowed & bus moving before negotiations had begun. Under such conditions it wasn't too difficult to refuse to pay. This time however my bike was only half on-board. Refusal to pay wouldn't have got me anywhere, quite literally.
